Monday Night Closer

Here's a song I recommend listening to during you commute from work during Mondays. It's a perfect mix of upbeat positive vibes with a dreamy feel to it.

PS. If you want your daily commute to be this trippy. Don't ask me what kind of Hallucinogens to take. I don't condone the taking of "illegal" substances.

Relaxation time

We all need a nice song to help us to wind down. Here's a song from semisonic to chill out to before going home.

PS. DON'T WATCH/LISTEN TO THIS SONG DURING WORK AS IT WILL REDUCE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY WITH ITS INFECTIOUS SLOW JAM AWESOMENESS

It's time for a reboot

It's been quite a while since I last posted something on the blog and the reason is I have been contemplating rebooting the blog. Ontime, Juan was a school project and now that the semester is over Ontime, Juan is now mine.

I have decided to turn it into a geek lifestyle blog.  Geek is chic. :-)

Juan to see a very impressive fan made fight scene?

I know this has nothing to do with being on time or managing your time wisely but still. I was so impressed that I just have to post. This video was created by the Thousand  Pounds company. Anyway this video is their homage to the worldwide phenomenon that is Naruto. Enjoy. Also please don't try this at home. If you attempted it and succeeded then good for you, if not please then don't try it again.

Juan's traveling songs part 1

It's a B-E-A-UTIFUL day out today. So after almost half a work-week of stormy weather lets appreciate this lovely sunny day. Here's an upbeat song from Owl City that I love listening to days like this.

Love this song. Enjoy the day.

Happy weekend everyone! Here's a classic 80's song to psyche you up for a kick-ass weekend!

Rock on!!!

Juan to pull yourself out of a rut?

Hey there. Before we start I need to explain what a "rut" is... A rut is:

1. A sunken track or groove made by the passage of vehicles.
2. A fixed, usually boring routine.

We of course will be discussing the second definition of a rut. All of us have daily routines that we stick to and sometimes they help us start up the day and sometimes the help us to relieve stress but once in a while we can get stuck with a routine that slows us down or puts unnecessary pressure in our lives.

Courtesy of lifehacker here is what you can do to get yourself out of a rut in your life.

Falling into a rut or a deep funk is really easy. Dragging yourself out of it is another thing. Sometimes all you need to do to pick yourself up is deal with one small task you didn't even know was weighing on you.
There are probably several things you've been meaning to do but never got around to doing—things that, if you were to accomplish them, could dramatically lift your spirits or get you going again. Things like clearing off a messy desk or dealing with non-urgent paperwork that you've been shuffling around daily.
When you're in a rut—just going through the motions—or, worse, at rock bottom and feel like you're incapable of doing anything, try doing just one small thing that has plagued you forever. Because it's bothered you for so long, the sense of accomplishment may be greater.
Fix a wobbly doorknob that's been bugging you, cancel that Netflix subscription already, make that doctor's appointment you've been putting off.

Monday Nostalgia Madness

Hey guys. Good Monday to y'all. Here's something to make your day a little brighter. Sesame street never fails to put a smile on my face. I hope it does the same for you.

PS. There is no number coding for today except in Makati and Las Pinas.

Juan to know how to get back to work after a long break?

It's Friday. Tomorrow is Saturday. Yesterday was Thursday. Now I want to kill myself for referring to a Rebecca Black song. Anyways, it's the weekend and you might just be thinking about what to do? Whatever it is I hope you have a happy and refreshing weekend.  Here are a few tips on how to ease your way into the week ahead so as not to kill your weekend vibe. These tips come from lifehacker.com so enjoy.Have a nice weekend people!

1. Start Your Day Right: Well-Rested and with a Good Breakfast

Whatever your habits were over the vacation, the first day back will be a lot less stressful if you've gotten a good night's sleep and have prepared everything you need the next morning so you're not rushing and can actually get something to eat. .
Get some stretching and other exercise in if you can. It's time to wake up and get back in the game!

2. Get started early or carve out some alone time

I always found it overwhelming to have tasks thrown at me the minute I walked in the door at work, especially so after a long break. If you empathize with this, try to get to work or campus a little early so you can get situated before you're bombarded by coworkers, managers, or classmates, and before you have to dive right in to your classes or that next meeting.
What to do when you get to work and you've got a long task list and debriefing waiting for you before you've even taken your coat off? Just ask the person if you can have a few minutes to put your stuff away and take that time to get settled.
For students, try to get the lay of the land before you head to your first class.

3. Plan Your Day and Week

If you've got a few precious extra minutes of your day to yourself, use it to get organized and prioritize your tasks. Choose the most essential things you need to do and put them on your list, and schedule less urgent ones throughout the week. If you can delegate tasks, all the better.
For school success, creating a study plan and routine at the start of the semester is crucial. Use a planner or online calendar like Google Calendar not just to schedule all your classes, but also carve out your study times and project due dates, referring to your course handouts.
This organizing part can get you back into the work or studying mindset and even get you excited for the rest of the week or year.

4. Start with Small Stuff You Can Check Off

If you're still feeling like you're only there in body, get a jump start by tackling just one small task. First have a list of tasks you want to accomplish for the day (see step 3), and make sure there's an easy (but still important) task on there at the top. Something as simple yet critical as following up with a contact on something discussed before the break works. There's nothing as invigorating as checking something off your list.
For students, your small tasks at the start of the year may be just to get oriented. Attend your first classes. Read the syllabi. Make sure you've got all the supplies and books you need (or make the notes and preparations to get them). You're off to a good start.

5. Tackle Email by Importance

If there's one thing that will kill your vacation mindset, it's looking at your email backlog, which can be overwhelming. Automatically deleting all email while on vacation is an extreme measure for this common problem, but there are many other ways to handle vacation emails.
To get out of catching-up mode, you'll want to make quick work of these emails. Set up filters for your email by sender and/or subjects to make sure you're not missing any important emails (Gmail's Priority Inbox filtering does a good job of identifying these for you). A quick scan of the remaining emails usually will be enough to help you delete the bulk email and then process the rest of the emails chronologically or by conversation or other sorting criteria. Just feeling like your emails are manageable and you've got a system for getting through them will make the transition back to work a lot easier.

6. Leaving Early and Other Tactics

Most schools start their semesters in the middle of the week to ease into the year, with shorter days in some cases. If you have flex time at work, taking a few afternoons off when you come back from vacation is a tactic we've noted before for getting back into work mode.
Getting back to organized may best be done by getting back into a routine and taking those simple single steps that will put you in the right mindset again

PS. Here is a better version of Friday to kick you in the weekend. Party!!!

Nostalgia mornings

If you're Filipino and under 40 you might remember this. Happy morning!

Why I "Juan-der"

Hey there peoples of the web. Still no phone line, still no internet, not able to do assignments and stuff. Still using the horrendous globe tattoo stick that gave up on me. Damn you globe!!! I need to calm myself down. *deep breaths*

Okay here's the premise of today's blog post. If you have free time while driving you should try to get yourself lost. Why you may ask. Here's my theory about this. We usually travel on set routes. People who work in Makati who live in QC, without a GPS device or a map, usually only take either C5 or EDSA both of which as we know is the motoring equivalent of hell, especially during rush hour.

Now think about it. There are side streets connected to EDSA... Where do they go? One day I summoned up the old spirit of adventure and decided it high time to find out. *Do not summon up the spirit of adventure when you are; running late, having a medical emergency, having a call-of-nature emergency, going to an important meeting, low on fuel, have a date with your partner who hates you being late. So after doing a mental checklist I decided to turn in at the nearest corner and started my journey.

To make a long story short I found out a way to go to Makati without going through EDSA, I found another way of going to QC through Mandaluyong. So even though I don't own a map or a GPS I used my memory, observation skills to widen my knowledge of our road system.

PS. if you're in a hurry and taking this side street shortcuts please for the love of all things holy. Don't attempt to drive like this guy.

PPS: Buy a map. It's cheaper than a tank of fuel.

Juan to chill out?

This past week my internet/phone connection was and still is busted at the present time. So that explains why I haven't posted anything in quite a while. Now I am back thanks to my trusty globe tattoo stick (I'm not endorsing this, in fact this is a desperation move on my part).

Since today is part of an extended weekend and you're probably chilling out. I bring you a tip on how to...Chill beer or any drink quickly. Less time waiting for the beer to cool down = more time enjoying it.

I prefer to use the 3rd method myself. Enjoy!

Juan day left till monday begins

Technically it's not Sunday yet but since I'm sleepy and can't wait for 12 midnight here goes. If you're going to pass through Quezon Avenue remember that there is an ongoing construction at the intersection of Q. Ave and Araneta Ave. Combine that with the inflow and outflow of people from the Sto. Domingo church and it will create a problem for motorists. I suggest finding other routes.  Have a happy weekend everyone.!

Why did I post this? Lets just say I was hungry and I forgot the number of the fastfood joint I wanted to order from. Enjoy.

"Juan-dering " if other's think like me.

Hmm... I'm "juand-ering" (wondering) if other filipinos think like me... a quick search  of the net provides these links.

Here is a dude named Jay Saldana explain the concept of filipino time.

Honestly I can't disagree with this dude. I suffer from this concept that everything is nearby even though I'm in Manila and I need to go to Makati I just allow myself 30-45 minutes of travel time thinking it's not so far away , I know shortcuts and sh*t but in the end if I hit just 1 major traffic jam then guess what. I will be late.

This video came from Lourd Divera from his show "Word of the Lourd"

Maybe he is right. His video struck a nerve inside me.

There are lot of other Pages in facebook about filipino time and being late. Till the next post.

Juan's Auto Suggestion

  1. DON'T BUY SUV'S UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED IT.
  2. Buy small city cars if you just drive around the metro, so that there is plenty of more room for maneuvering/ parking.
  3. Learn proper driving etiquette.
  4. FOR GOD'S SAKE FOLLOW THE EFFING TRAFFIC LAWS!!! Red = Stop, Green = Go, Yellow = Prepare to stop. Stay in your lane.

If people/drivers follow the rules then traffic would flow meaning a smoother travel for the driver. Advice for pedestrians tomorrow.

Juan to Understand the Mind of the Tardy. Part 1

Okay since my pen name is The Late Juan Miguel it might be a  good assumption that  it is a result of my inability to get to an appointment in time. If that is your assumption then you are partly correct, I got this from my accounting professor during 2nd year college because I have failed to be on time for majority of her class. Nowadays I'm trying to turn over a new leaf, with the word trying as the operative term.

I remember watching different movies that have rehab scenes in them, all of them say that the first thing you should do is admit that you have a problem and that you need help. Go ahead admit it. (I admit I am chronically tardy). Okay now lets look at the different traits of tardy personality.

  • Risk-takers: These people are addicted to the thrill of leaving for their appointed destination only when they absolutely must. They don’t mind taking the risk of being late, because they don’t want to risk being early and waiting for others. This may be because deep-down they fear feeling rejected, if they wind up waiting for others.
  • Freedom-makers: Those who felt trapped by authority as children often grow up to be “late-niks,” who use lateness to feel free. Their intense wish not to be controlled by others may be at the root of their lateness. Or they may have a rebellious nature that essentially tells others: “You will not tell me how to run my life and when I have to be somewhere.”
  • Organization-slackers: Another reason someone may be late is poor organizational skills. They have difficulty planning out a realistic schedule and calculating how long each of their tasks will take and how long it will take them to get to their appointments on time. These people generally have poor organizational skills, though they may be very intelligent.
  • Trouble-avoiders: These people, unconsciously or even consciously, wish to avoid the people they are supposed to meet or the place where they are going. This may be the reason for their lateness. In these situations, lateness may be a form of passive-aggressive behavior. Since they’re angry that they must go to an appointment, they make others wait for them. These late-niks may not even be aware of their anger.

Do you have any of the traits above? Hell... I do.

Juan's All terrain vehicle under the operating table again

This is what my weekday commute looks like:

This here, people of the world is the perfect example of the terrain you would need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Fortunately we don't own one so my family had to make due with this.

That Ladies and Gentlemen is my family's Mitsubishi L300 van. It has been faithfully serving my family for the past 15+ years. and yes it is still working, until today. Yes I know that aesthetically speaking that it is ugly, old, rotten, and ugly but this car holds a lot of memories in it, more than 300,000 Km worth of it. Personally, it has been my service vehicle going to and fro our farm in Rizal for the past 2 years now. Unfortunately the terrain at the beginning of this post has taken its toll on the L300. Now it is under the knife again for another engine overhaul. To get back into the topic of this blog. Here is Juan's advice to people who own/drive their automobiles wherever they travel to, in order to save time and money.

1) Always check the coolant level of your car to avoid overheating.
2) At least once a week check the oil level of your car's engine. Remember Oil costs just a hundred or so Php per litter an engine overhaul can cost you upwards of 30,000 Php and will take up to a week or more to finish. Check your car's manual or the internet for the recommended engine oil for your car.
3) Pick your gas station. If it looks like the gas station is not frequented by customers then be wary as they may have old gasoline/diesel. Petroleum products losses potency as time passes and this might affect the performance of your engine and might increase wear and tear. Plus water in your fuel = bad.
4) If the check engine light...lights up then have it checked out. It might be something minor but it could also be the start of a serious drive-train problem.
5) Don't needlessly rev your engine while stopped. It might sound cool (to you...but it's not) but revving the engine without load can damage your engine in the long run. Plus it wastes fuel. Plus you look like an immature SOB. You SOB you.

Juan to be smart and dumb at the same time

I love listening to radio. Even when I was a kid I grew up listening to Ernie Baron's Knowledge Power (Rest in Peace). Back then The only music I was listening to were the classic songs Ka Ernie played during his show. When I reached High school I started listening to 97.1 back then it was called Campus Radio (EFF YOU Mike Enriquez!). During those days of yore I was introduced to Parokya ni Edgar, John Mayer, BSB, etc. but what I enjoyed most about that radio station was the witty banter of the DJ's with his/her partner or his monologue to his listeners.

Fast forward to 2nd year college... During this time Acoustic was in it was the time of Paolo Santos and the like. During this time my Tita told me about a radio station that played this kind of music. From that time I started to listen to Jam 88.3 and Campus.

Time passed. Campus disappeared from air. Came back again briefly on 99.5 then disappeared again. Then came the 3 boys of Magic.

BNO (Boys Night Out) changed my listening habit because it injected sexually tinged, semi-wholesome, fully immature banter between the three DJ's. Slick Rick, Toni Toni, and SamYG. Their kind of humor had me listening for more than 3 years now. But recently I felt that me and the boy's humor was starting to not connect anymore. I felt that while I was growing up (I'm at my mid 20's so don't tell me I'm old) the boys were stuck with their on-air personas. I was shocked to say that I have matured. I needed a new radio show to relate to. A radio show that reflected my more opinionated view of the world with my still ever present juvenile side. This was the time I reunited with King DJ Logan. I heard about this legendary radio personality from my friend who told me that he was the creator of BNO but was unceremoniously booted out of the radio industry. Well he was back and with a show that reflected his view of the world.

The Disenchanted Kingdom was his new show. What a name! It fit perfectly with what I was feeling at that time. The shows humor was smart and idiotic at the same time. It was opinionated about current issues but at the same time pokes fun at the most mundane things even themselves and their station. I have found my new night show. To show how stupid the show can get here's something KDL (King DJ Logan) that was playing at their show. WTF. as for the smart things you better tune in to find out. The Disenchanted Kingdom on 99.5 RT Mon- Fri 6-9PM. Enjoy your trip home.

Juan to wake up

Being a kid of the very late 80's. Here's a very nostalgic wake-up call.

Nothing like a happy childhood memory to start your day in a good way.

Juan to be lazy but effective

Hey peoples on the interweb. The name is Juan. Just Juan. I'm part of team tick tock. A group of University Santo Tomas Grad school students whose aim is to campaign and promote the importance of "being on time".

This blog is about time and not just being on time. Time is relative. To others it keeps them organized, it reminds them where they have to be at or what they are supposed to be doing. For me time is something that reminds me that I have a limited amount of time left in the world. Every tick of the clock deducts a second from your stay in the world. That is why I prefer to take the route less traveled by people in the Metro. I prefer to take my time and live.

Now, I know that a lot of us "can't" find the time to appreciate the little things in life because of our hectic urban lifestyles and urban problems, like traffic, traffic, traffic, killer buses, annoying jeepneys, traffic, weaving taxis, oh... and did I mention traffic? That's where this blog comes into play.

My theory is that if we do what we need to do, faster and more effectively, we could have more time to do the things we want to do. That means if we get to where we need to go on-time, finish what we do faster, then we can have more time for ourselves. Work faster = more Me time.
